It was America’s tallest building for over 40 years (1931-1972) until the completion of the World Trade Center. It is an international landmark and was made very famous by Godzilla. On 9/11/2001, it gained a new found love from New Yorkers along with the rest of the United States as it became the tallest building in New York. What am I talking about? The Empire State Building.
The Empire State Building is set to be illuminated in red and yellow lights to honor – drum roll please – 60th anniversary of the Chinese Revolution. Yes, you heard right. The buildings managers are honoring China’s communist revolution which killed anywhere between 43 million and 100 million people via torture, starvation, and famine. The majority of all the deaths occurred between the years of 1949-1976, Mao Zedong’s death. He was the communist dictator during those years. During a 5 year period, the Great Famine of 1958-1962, it is believed that over 36 million Chinese to have starved as a result of Mao’s Great Leap Forward, a government policy that was meant to industrialize the nation. During those years, peasants ate bark, maggots, bird droppings, human flesh, etc. while government storehouses were full of cereal and other products.
You may be asking yourselves, “How bad did it get?” In 1968, an 18 year old member of the Red Guard, took refuge with a family in a small village. He was later imprisoned for being a traitor and due to his status within the Red Guard, he was not killed. He was released in 1997. Here is what he saw:
“We walked along beside the village… Before my eyes, among the weeds, rose up one of the scenes I had been told about, one of the banquets at which the families had swapped children in order to eat them. I could see the worried faces of the families as they chewed the flesh of other people’s children. The children who were chasing butterflies in a nearby field seemed to be the reincarnation of the children devoured by their parents. I felt sorry for the children but not as sorry as I felt for their parents. What had made them swallow that human flesh, amidst the tears and grief of others — flesh that they would never have imagined tasting, even in their worst nightmares?”
It is absurd to light up the Empire State Building red and yellow due to their history and how many innocent people they killed throughout the years. China has never been charged for their human rights violation and never will due to their strong status around the world. It is an international travesty that they will never be held accountable for the past actions. If Cuba doesn’t get reprimanded for their human rights violation, how could we expect the powerful China to be?
